Ruben Amorim is under serious pressure to keep his job at Man United after the 3-1 loss to Brentford.
Amorim continues to plant his foot into the ground and play his 3-4-3 system, despite the results and despite the fact that they are looking more like a relegation candidate than a Champions League challenger.
After spending a lot of money on new players in the summer, the United board will have expected improvement under Amorim, but it hasn’t yet come, and so the boss needs to make changes in order to save his job, because otherwise the board will be quick to act if they continue to play like they did against Brentford.
Amorim needs to start Kobbie Mainoo to save his job
The biggest issue this season at United has been in midfield. They have struggled to control midfield, and in a lot of cases, there hasn’t been much of a midfield this season, with Bruno Fernandes struggling, and Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte really not the reaching the levels expected of them from when they joined the club.
We saw this against Brentford, as the United midfield was completely overrun, so what is the solution? Where is Kobbie Mainoo...?
Amorim has been consistently stubborn when it comes to leaving Mainoo out, and you have to question why. The 20-year-old has been excellent for United in the past and can be considered the future of the team. However, against Brentford, he was yet again on the bench, and it is hard to see why.
Mainoo is brilliant at winning the ball back and carrying it forward, something that United haven’t done at all this season. He is someone who can make a difference in the holding role, and may help United to have some control in the middle of the park, rather than getting overrun by teams like Brentford.
If Amorim were to play Mainoo, it may help to solve United’s issues in midfield, which could transform their results and performances. But if he continues to leave Mainoo out, things may not improve, and the board will have to make a decision.
Scholes hails Man United’s ‘brightest spark’
Former Man United midfielder Paul Scholes knows a thing or two about what a successful midfielder looks like, and he has been ever praising of Mainoo ever since the 20-year-old broke out at Old Trafford two years ago.
Scholes told TNT Sport in the summer, when there were rumours of Mainoo’s potential exit from the club: “I think you guys feel like he is the finished product – and he is not. He has so much potential to grow up even more. He’s United’s brightest spark. He’s probably the leading man who could be here for the next 5-10 years.”
Amorim should consider listening to Scholes, as getting Mainoo more involved could help to save his Man United job. Starting with Sunderland and then against Liverpool after the international break.
