'It hurt': Everton star admits 'setback' for him and David Moyes that he wasn't expecting

Everton defender Seamus Coleman has hit back at recent criticism being directed towards David Moyes.

It has been a frustrating few weeks for Everton which has seen the Blues go without a win in any of their last four games.

Moyes will be looking to put three points on the board on Sunday when Crystal Palace make the trip to Merseyside.

Even the 62-year-old manager has received flak in recent weeks following a dip in form.

Tony Bellew slammed any suggestion that Moyes should be sacked on the back of the draw against West Ham United on Monday.

With the criticism beginning to build, Coleman has insisted that Everton fans should blame the players when it comes to one specific incident.

Seamus Coleman says players to blame for Everton’s Carabao Cup exit

Last month, Everton crashed out of the Carabao Cup to a struggling Wolves side, just weeks after beating them at Molineux.

On the back of the loss, Everton News columnist Alan Myers questioned Moyes’ team selection, with the 62-year-old making a number of changes.

Speaking in Monday’s match day programme, Coleman has admitted the blame should be put on the players who did not play up to their usual standards.

“Every Premier League manager uses the Carabao Cup to give players some minutes. It’s a squad game these days and the players need time on the pitch,” he said.

"Your support inside the stadium has played a big part in us starting so well. Please keep it going. We thrive on the atmosphere you are producing." ✍️

“We did the same, but sometimes, it just doesn’t work out. It’s never easy to hit the ground running when you haven’t been playing regularly but there are no excuses from me – the performance on the night wasn’t good enough over the 90 minutes.

“It was a setback I wasn’t expecting and it hurt. There aren’t many opportunities to win silverware and I felt for our supporters who once again packed the away end at Molineux.”

Moyes has praised Coleman’s mentality behind the scenes at Finch Farm, but the veteran was unable to steer Everton to victory against Wolves.

It is a huge opportunity that the Blues saw pass them by to finally end their trophy drought.

Everton had enough to beat Wolves in the Carabao Cup

Given the way in which Wolves had started their season, there were no excuses for Everton not to win that game in the cup.

Even Vitor Pereira made a number of changes on the night. So, it wasn’t just Moyes who fielded a weakened side.

Moyes was delighted with Everton’s transfer business this summer in bringing in players to really bolster the quality of the squad.

But the players who played in that game at Molineux simply did not perform to an acceptable standard.

Jack Grealish came off the bench and changed the game for Everton, but even he was unable to help break the away side’s deadlock.

It is certainly a game the players will regret for the rest of the season.
