Michael Carrick could be in line for a temporary stint at Manchester United if the club decides to part ways with Ruben Amorim and bring in a new manager in the coming weeks.
The spotlight on Amorim, 40, is intensifying after yet another disappointing result over the weekend, with United suffering a 3-1 defeat away at Brentford.
This latest setback has only fuelled discussions about Amorim's poor Premier League record since he took the reins at Old Trafford last November, having secured just 34 points from 33 matches.
Manchester United chiefs are believed to be backing their man for now. However, as Amorim's position becomes increasingly precarious week by week, chatter about potential successors continues to grow, including the possibility of Carrick making a return to Old Trafford.
The Sun suggests that Carrick is one of the interim options available to United should they decide a managerial change is necessary.

The former Middlesbrough manager, 44, briefly took the helm for two games at United in late 2021 following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and served on the club's coaching staff after a 12-year spell as a Red Devils player.
The report highlights that Carrick still has close ties to the United set-up, as his 16 year old son, Jacy, is part of the club's academy. He recently worked as a pundit for Amazon Prime's Champions League coverage, interviewing Tottenham head coach, Thomas Frank.
Interestingly, Solskjaer backed Carrick as a future Manchester United boss during a chat with The Athletic in 2023. "I am 100 per cent sure that Michael will be the manager of Manchester United if he wants to be," he declared.

"I cannot see him not being the Manchester United manager."
Solskjaer went on: "He's a winner, a massive winner, yet he stays in control of his emotions. He knows what he wants and doesn't lose his rag. He'll never be emotional and fight with the players."

Whilst Carrick might be called upon in a temporary capacity, Manchester United have other Premier League bosses they rate highly and could view as potential successors to Amorim, including Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola and Fabian Hurzeler.
