Browns pick stadium builders with national clout and local history

The builders tapped for the Browns’ new enclosed stadium are no strangers to Cleveland, with past projects including Progressive Field and the team’s current lakefront home.

On Thursday, Oct. 2, the Haslam Sports Group announced it has selected AECOM Hunt and Turner Construction to manage construction of Huntington Bank Field, the $2.4 billion venue planned for Brook Park.

Both firms bring decades of experience in building some of the most high-profile stadiums in the country, along with a history of shaping Cleveland’s major sports facilities.

Turner has operated in Northeast Ohio for more than a century, with projects that include renovations to the Browns’ current home and Columbus Crew’s Lower.com Field. AECOM Hunt, meanwhile, built Progressive Field for the Guardians and was part of the team behind the Browns’ lakefront stadium when it opened in 1999.

Nationally, AECOM Hunt and Turner have teamed up on some of the biggest stadium projects in the country, including Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium and the future homes of the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans.

Enabling work at the Brook Park site began Wednesday, marking the first visible step toward construction. A formal groundbreaking is planned for early 2026, with the opening set for 2029.

“The new Huntington Bank Field represents a new era for Northeast Ohio — and for reimagining what a fan experience can be,” said Jason Kopp, COO for AECOM Hunt’s Central Region. “We are honored to be entrusted by Haslam Sports Group to deliver this transformative project to shape the future of sports and entertainment for Browns Nation, elevate Northeast Ohio and welcome millions of visitors for generations to come.”

Cleveland-based DiGeronimo Companies will play a key role as a local partner. Independence Excavating is handling sitework to prepare the grounds, while Independence Construction is joining AECOM Hunt and Turner as part of the joint management team.

“Partnering with such respected and accomplished construction managers as AECOM Hunt and Turner will help us create a world-class stadium experience and entertainment district for our fans that will benefit the entire Northeast Ohio region,” Haslam Sports Group president David Jenkins said. “Continuing to work with established local partners like the DiGeronimo Companies and Independence Excavating reinforces our commitment to spurring economic development and creating thousands of jobs and opportunities throughout our community as we move toward breaking ground on the new Huntington Bank Field in early 2026.”

When it opens in 2029, Huntington Bank Field will be Ohio’s first enclosed stadium and a centerpiece of a major mixed-use development.
