Manchester United legend Michael Carrick has landed a surprise new role with UEFA just months amid ongoing pressure on Ruben Amorim to deliver results.
The 44-year-old former Middlesbrough boss has been linked with a surprise return to Old Trafford as interim boss, should the Man United hierarchy choose to part ways with the Portuguese head coach.
It's a role he's worked in before having acted as caretaker manager following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure from the club. Carrick's first game in charge was a win over Villareal in the Champions League and he also picked up a 3-2 win over Arsenal in the Premier League.
He stepped down from his position as first-team coach following Ralph Rangnick's arrival at Old Trafford, having picked up two wins and one draw in his interim spell in charge.
Carrick was appointed as Boro boss in October 2022 and guided them to the Championship play-off semi-final at the end of that season, where they were beaten by Coventry City.
Despite that brilliant first campaign, the United legend was unable to repeat the feat and left the Riverside in June earlier this year after a 10th-placed finish.
Now, just a few months on, Carrick has been appointed as a UEFA Technical Observer and recently gave his expertise on PSG's recent 2-1 win over Barcelona.

Speaking on the UEFA website, Carrick said: "It sounds very basic but the key to the game is one-twos, third-man runs and forward runs behind.
"There was so much focus on pressing forward and relying on regaining it in that direction. But as we saw, the downside of this is there is a lot of space behind and across the back line.
"It's great if you win the ball back or if the other team keep passing to feet and trying to keep possession but it leaves you exposed against a team that is happy to run and pass less. It's runs in behind that were rewarded."
