FOXBOROUGH - To no surprise, Josh McDaniels caught wind of Stefon Diggs saying his comfort level with the Patriots offense was a “five out of 10.”
In recent days, the comment has made the rounds through various media outlets.
Diggs made the remark following Sunday’s blowout win over the Carolina Panthers, a game where he caught six passes for a season-high 101 yards in the 42-12 win.
Even though Diggs clarified what he meant Wednesday, saying he was being facetious, McDaniels couldn’t help but chime in during his media session Thursday.
McDaniels was asked about Diggs’ versatility to play any spot in the formation, and the Patriots offensive coordinator seized the moment.
“It’s probably like a nine out of 10,” McDaniels said, flashing a smile on cue. “In terms of understanding the system and the scheme, we probably got a little bit of juice left to squeeze out of the orange. Obviously it’s important, and I think he was being modest when he said that. I heard that little comment.”
Indeed he did.
McDaniels, however, doesn’t seem overly concerned about Diggs picking up the system.
Diggs, who created a stir with the initial remark, attempted to put the genie back in the bottle on Wednesday.
“When I said the other day it was a 5 out of 10, obviously, I was being facetious, or sarcastic in a way,” Diggs said. “Just because, the way I look at it, I never want to get too comfortable. I said 5 out of 10 because if it’s 8 out of 10, or 9 out of 10, I don’t really have to look at my notes. I don’t really have to look over it multiple times.”
“For me, I’m just trying to keep it at a comfort level of being hungry, and humble ... not going in thinking I’ve got it all figured out. That offense does throw some curve balls at you.”
