Just after halftime in Week 5's edition of Thursday Night Football, the San Francisco 49ers were driving down the field once more against the Los Angeles Rams. After one half, Kyle Shanahan and his injury-ridden Niners looked like they were ready to take out a division rival with no mercy.
Quarterback Mac Jones had been on fire through the first two quarters and, from the looks of it, he was ready to lead the Niners to another scoring drive right away into the third quarter.
About halfway through the third quarter, Jones ended up going down after a huge hit on a third down play. Rams defensive lineman Byron Young came in quick and followed through the hit, landing on Jones. The quarterback went down, grabbing his leg, and forcing an immediate commercial break.
Mac Jones gave the 49ers an injury scare on Thursday Night Football
Update: Jones returned to the field on the following drive. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported and reiterated that Jones wasalready playing through a PCL sprain suffered in training camp, but via the live broadcast, it was also reported Jones was dealing with cramps.
Following the commercial break, the 49ers came out for a field goal attempt. The kick was good, putting them up 20-7 on the Rams for the moment.
Then, the broadcast crew talked through what happened during the break. Jones was able to get up, jog off the field on his own and received an ovation from his teammates who were elated to see he looked to be alright for the moment.
Whether or not this injury will impact Jones going forward remains to be seen. Many times, the severity of an injury like this isn't known right away. The day or days after can reveal more damage than the medical team might have seen right away, despite Jones' ability to get up start jogging right away.
Again, at first glance, the injury looked like it could be fairly severe. But, we'll continue to monitor Jones' status not only as the game goes on, but as the rest of this week unfolds. As we hear more updates, whether it be in postgame comments or in the coming days, you're sure to see them here.
