‘I spoke with…’ - Laurie Whitwell issues surprise Amorim sack update ahead of Man Utd v…

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim will keep his job at Old Trafford, even if he loses to Sunderland, according to The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell.

It's been a disappointing start to the season for the Red Devils, who currently sit in the bottom half of the Premier League table. Despite being given a full summer transfer window and pre-season, Amorim has failed to turn things around so far, with their loss against Brentford last time out summing up their campaign so far.

Amorim was given time last term due to the fact that he wasn't given a pre-season or transfer window, replacing Erik ten Hag during the 2024/2025 campaign. It's still not working out for United or the Portuguese manager, but he's certainly not the only coach to have struggled during his time at Old Trafford after Sir Alex Ferguson.

Amorim Won't be Sacked if he Loses v Sunderland

According to The Athletic's Whitwell, even if United lose against newly promoted Sunderland in the Premier League this weekend, Amorim is unlikely to be relieved of his duties. Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to give Amorim the full season to turn things around, and will judge him at the end of the 2025/2026 campaign.

"I spoke with several knowledgeable people and was told that even if Man Utd lose to Sunderland, I don't think the club will sack Ruben Amorim. "Ratcliffe wants to give Amorim a full season before judging him."

There's certainly a section of the United fan base that will be disappointed with the news that Amorim is likely to stay for the remainder of the season, but you'd imagine that Ratcliffe's stance could change if things get dramatically worse. It's understandable that INEOS want to give him time, but if they go on a run of straight losses in the coming weeks, it certainly wouldn't be a surprise to see Ratcliffe change his mind.

United host Sunderland on Saturday before the international break, then they'll be forced to endure one of their toughest games of the season in a couple of weeks. The Red Devils then make the short trip to Premier League champions Liverpool, before facing Brighton to finish off October. It's going to be an interesting few weeks at Old Trafford, especially if United continue to struggle.
