Sunderland boss prepares for Old Trafford challenge and speaks about Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim
Manchester United’s difficult start has been widely discussed. Ahead of their clash with Sunderland, Regis Le Bris struck a measured tone. The Sunderland manager, enjoying a strong Premier League start, admitted that facing United at Old Trafford is still one of the toughest challenges. Le Bris said his team must raise their performance to compete against a side full of quality.
He acknowledged United’s problems but refused to underestimate them, pointing out that Amorim’s men continue to create chances from open play, in behind defences, and from set pieces. Le Bris noted United’s strength in individual talent and suggested one moment of confidence could bring them back into form.
For Sunderland, the Frenchman stressed that his focus is on maintaining their identity, controlling what they can, and ignoring United’s struggles. He described the match as tough but emphasised that Sunderland’s performance and game plan remain the only controllable elements. His comments underline both respect for the opposition and belief in his own players.
“Being at Old Trafford demands a strong personality and strong character. I still believe that we’ll need to upgrade our performance to be competitive in Manchester.
“They are strong, create many chances from everywhere, direct play in behind, set pieces, with talented players. Now it’s just a question of click, confidence, circumstances, and scenario. So for us the only thing we can control is our way of playing, the way we want to play this game, to face this challenge, being aware that it will be tough.”

Amorim’s defining test against Sunderland
Sunderland boss prepares for Old Trafford challenge and speaks about Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim.
Ruben Amorim will have a big test in Manchester United’s clash against Sunderland
While Sunderland arrive with confidence, the pressure is firmly on Ruben Amorim. Manchester United sit 14th with only two wins from six games. The clash with Sunderland could prove decisive for his future. History gives him some encouragement, as United have lost only two of their last 30 league meetings with Sunderland. Yet Sunderland are in strong form, with three wins in their last five. Their attacking wing-backs and creative midfielders could cause problems.
Amorim continues to rely on his 3-4-3 system, a formation built around width and wing-back involvement, but it has struggled against opponents who use clever man-to-man marking and central overloads. His reluctance to adapt has drawn criticism. ESPN quoted Jamie Carragher calling Amorim’s reign “a disaster.”
Reports suggest he retains support from parts of the hierarchy, but patience will not last forever. With Matt Le Tissier urging United to look at Oliver Glasner over Gareth Southgate and rivals like Liverpool eager to beat United to the signing of Jarrad Branthwaite, the pressure on United to steady themselves is immense. For Amorim, Saturday’s game could decide whether he turns things around or faces louder calls for change.
