Not many people were surprised to hear that Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert did not practice on Wednesday, but they were at least happy to listen to the good news on Thursday. With a small problem popping up.
Thursday's injury report for Week 5 indicated that Goedert was back at practice with his knee injury and was on track to play in Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos. It was even better to see Jalen Carter (shoulder), Adoree' Jackson (groin), and Lane Johnson (shoulder) all full participants. Linebacker Nakobe Dean was also limited in practice, but don't expect him to play against Denver.
The twist to the injury report is that tight end Grant Calcaterra is listed on it, as he did not practice due to illness. It's unknown how severe the illness is, but with him missing practice, there's now a slight chance that Calcaterra will not play on Sunday.
What to make of the latest injury report for the Eagles in Week 5
If Calcaterra, for some reason, isn't able to go, it wouldn't be the end of the world. He has taken a lot of criticism for his play this season, with poor blocking and having just two receptions for 22 yards. Not exactly the strongest case for a permanent replacement for Goedert if he doesn't return after the 2025 season.
Keep in mind that the Eagles also have Kylen Granson and Cameron Latu on the roster, who can play tight end. Latu has made a strong impact on special teams with his punt block against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, and he's playing fullback.
While Goedert's practice is good, it is still not certain that he will play on Sunday. Friday's practice and how much he works out will be the real determination.
Outside of that, Carter, Jackson, and Johnson being full participants in practice are strong indicators that they should be ready to go on Sunday. Jackson has the more interesting storyline since his CB2 job is not secure with Kelee Ringo getting a good endorsement from Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio earlier this week.
