Manchester United vs Chelsea: WSL Preview, Gameweek Five, 2025

It is a top-of-the-table clash on Friday night in the Women's Super League as Manchester United host reigning champions Chelsea at Leigh Sports Village.

Sonia Bompastor's side remains the only one in the league to have maintained a 100% record up to now, sitting on a perfect twelve out of twelve points. They will certainly be looking to build on a positive result against West Ham United last weekend, where they looked back at their clinical best, defeating the Hammers 4-0.

But it will not be as easy for the London outfit this time around as they face arguably their toughest test so far this campaign in Manchester United. The Red Devils sit in second, two points behind this weekend's opponents, only dropping points in a draw to Arsenal. A win would take them top, but that is a tall order against Chelsea.

Team News

Manchester United:

Marc Skinner will remain without the service of Millie Turner, following her knee injury sustained in the 5-1 victory against the London City Lionesses back in game week 2. The head coach stated that they hope to welcome the defender back just after the new year.

Leah Galton is still a doubt for the hosts. Skinner revealed that the 31-year-old is in training but will likely not feature in the matchday squad.

The positive news for United is that both Anna Sandberg and Simisola Awujo should be ready to play a part in this encounter.

Chelsea:

Mayra Ramirez remains out for the Blues as the Colombian is not expected to be part of a matchday squad until the new year.

Defender Naomi Girma is also out, but whilst there are no returns from injury for the Blues, Bompastor has been able to deliver positive news on a trio of key players.

The Chelsea head coach has unveiled that Lauren James, Lucy Bronze and Niamh Charles are all back on the grass as they recover from their respective injuries. She has, however, confirmed that none of them will be ready to face United.

Predicted Lineups

Manchester United:

Tullis Joyce; Riviere, Le Tissier, Janssen, Rolfo; Olme, Miyazawa; Park, Toone, Malard; Terland

Chelsea:

Hampton; Bjorn, Bright, Buurman; Walsh, Cuthbert, Jean-Francois, Thompson; Kaneryd, Kaptein; Beever-Jones

Key Players

Manchester United - Ella Toone

The midfielder has proved that she is a player for the big occasions, and what a result it would be if the Red Devils were to get anything against Chelsea.

On two goals and an assist so far this campaign, she has had a positive start, and will certainly be a player that Chelsea will keep a close eye on. The midfielder has the capability to slice open the defence with her passes.

Chelsea have not exactly looked impenetrable so far this season; therefore, Toone and United will be looking to capitalise on this.

Chelsea - Aggie Beever-Jones

The striker has had a simply superb start to the season, arguably the best of anyone in the entire WSL. Beever-Jones will certainly fancy her chances of finding the back of the net for the fifth consecutive game.

She has proved that she does not need a flurry of chances to find the back of the net, showing a clinical edge, even in the matches where Chelsea have been far from their most threatening.

With Sam Kerr growing in fitness week by week, it is vital for Beever-Jones to maintain this form as she looks to give Bompastor a serious selection headache.
