Jalen Hurts doesn't quite clearly answer the burning DeVonta Smith question

With all the talk around A.J. Brown this week, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was asked about his other wide receiver, DeVonta Smith, and his production during the first four weeks of the season so far.

"You’d have to ask DeVonta (Smith). I think we’re all focused on the work. In terms of feelings, you’d have to ask them how they feel.”

What is going on with Smith not being so involved in Eagles' offense?

Hurts, who consistently remains steadfast in his answers, continues to keep his comments short and concise when talking about teammates. Earlier in that same media availability, Hurts stated he was really only focused on the "main thing", which is most likely winning games, and ultimately another championship.

Smith has been his usual quiet self, not drawing attention to himself, whether directly or through metaphorical or cryptic tweets. Smith has been quiet this year, putting together 17 receptions (about four per game), 158 receiving yards (about 40 receiving yards per game), along with a touchdown, hardly the expectation of a first-round pick who is earning 25 million dollars a year.

While Smith and the Eagles' wide receivers have seen a massive reduction in production during the first quarter of the season, Philadelphia has still remained unbeaten going into week five. Despite the lack of production, Smith (and all of the Eagles' skill position players) remain extremely vital to the overall mission of the 2025 franchise in their roles.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni has defended his wide receivers, emphasizing that production in the offense doesn't always show up on the stat sheet, and the team has still managed (while not firing on all cylinders) to remain perfect, finding ways to win no matter what.

While Smith has taken to social media to voice these concerns, the season is still young enough that the former Alabama star will find a way to match his career numbers by its conclusion. The Eagles and Smith look to improve to 5-0 this Sunday, taking on the Denver Broncos at Lincoln Financial Field.
