CLEVELAND, Ohio — When the Browns and Vikings clash in London on Sunday, the game might ultimately come down to a fascinating contrast of offensive weapons — Minnesota’s elite but top-heavy receiving corps against Cleveland’s more balanced but less flashy approach anchored by an emerging run game.
It’s a matchup that has Orange and Brown Talk podcast host Dan Labbe intrigued: “I’m going to look at another matchup that I think is really interesting and that’s whose weapons are going to be better in this football game.”
The Vikings boast legitimate star power with Justin Jefferson, widely considered one of the NFL’s best receivers, and the talented Jordan Addison returning from suspension. Meanwhile, Cleveland’s receiving corps has struggled to find its footing, with Jerry Jeudy’s disappointing start (zero touchdowns, four drops) and Cedric Tillman now headed to injured reserve.
“The Browns pass catching corps has kind of been through the ringer a little bit already,” noted Browns beat reporter Ashley Bastock. “And then Jerry Jeudy has obviously been struggling these opening games of the season. ... He doesn’t have any touchdowns yet. He’s tied for second in the league with four drops.”
But where the Browns might have the equalizer is their suddenly potent ground game, led by rookie Quinshon Judkins, who has shown steady improvement each week. Combined with their tight end duo of David Njoku and Harold Fannin Jr., Cleveland’s offensive approach represents a stark contrast to Minnesota’s aerial attack.
“So I’m really curious what all of these weapons are going to do because the Vikings obviously have two really great players on the outside at receiver. The Browns are kind of trying to figure that stuff out, but it seems like their running game is really good,” Labbe observed. “So in this battle of weapons, which quarterback is going to be helped out more by his weapons?”
This weapons comparison is particularly crucial given the quarterback situation on both sides. For rookie Dillon Gabriel making his first start, having reliable options will be essential against Brian Flores’ complex defensive schemes. Meanwhile, Carson Wentz will need his elite receivers to create separation quickly behind a patchwork offensive line.
The Vikings’ approach will likely be straightforward — force-feed Jefferson, who had 10 catches last week, and hope he and Addison can create explosive plays. Minnesota will need those splash plays, as their running game has struggled with Aaron Jones sidelined.
For Cleveland, the formula appears to be establishing Judkins early to take pressure off Gabriel, then using their tight ends as safety valves in the passing game. Will Isaiah Bond, who showed promise against Detroit, continue to develop as a legitimate second receiving option? And can Jeudy finally build some chemistry with his new quarterback?
In a game that features two compromised offensive lines, the deciding factor might simply be which supporting cast can make life easier for their quarterback. If the Vikings can connect on a few deep shots to Jefferson or Addison, it might be enough. If Judkins can consistently move the chains and the Browns’ tight ends can exploit the middle of the field, Gabriel might just have enough support to navigate his first start successfully.
For a Browns offense desperately seeking an identity, this matchup provides a perfect opportunity to establish their run-first, tight-end heavy approach against a Vikings defense that ranks 24th against the run, allowing approximately 130 yards per game on the ground.
Don’t miss this fascinating clash of offensive philosophies in London. Tune in Sunday at 9:30 a.m. ET to see which collection of weapons will prove more effective in what promises to be a compelling contest at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
