Everton dragged into row to save San Siro – Politician uses Toffees as example

Everton have found themselves being drawn into the debate about demolishing the San Siro in Milan.

Selling the San Siro, AC Milan and Inter Milan’s iconic stadium, was approved this week by a city council. That has paved the way for demolition, with both clubs hoping to build a replacement on the site.

The San Siro has been AC Milan’s stadium since 1926 but has not been modernised since the 1990 World Cup. Repeated attempts to modernise it have failed and, alongside Inter, the plan is to build a new 71,500 capacity ground on in its place.

This is part of a large urban regeneration project, with aims for it to be ready for Euro 2032. Italy are joint hosts of that tournament with Türkiye.

Everton example used in opposition to San Siro demolition

Architectural firms have already been appointed to design a new ground. But the idea has been met with firm opposition. Some prefer to see the San Siro modernised, or even left alone.

La Russa is one of those, because he’s seen Everton and others do the same. Subsequently, he believes the Milan clubs should follow suit.

_“All over the world, there are stadiums that are as close as 50 metres from each other,”_ he said.

_“Everton didn’t demolish their stadium but instead designated it for women’s football and built a new one. In Argentina, they’re 50 metres apart, in England. There are photos; go online and find out how many stadiums are next to each other._

_“The new stadium has now been authorised, and that was also my ambition and desire. It’s right that Inter and Milan have a modern stadium. My opposition lies in the need to demolish San Siro._

_“I’ve said it and I’ll repeat it: when people talk about Milan, they talk about La Scala and La Scala del Football, these are two monuments that aren’t unused: La Scala is used for opera, and San Siro could be put to a great many uses, saving the approximately €80m it will cost to demolish them, not to mention the environmental damage that will result._

_But there will be time, because do you know what will happen? The new stadium will be built, the clubs have the right to build, they put up the money, and it’s not like they can do it for charity…”_
