The international break is close with it set to start following this weekend’s set of Premier League fixtures.
With this the case, some of Manchester United’s players have been called up to represent their nations.
Among these players is Diego Leon who has received his first international call-up by Paraguay ahead of the nation’s friendly fixtures against Japan and South Korea.
Furthermore, with Paraguay already qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, this chance could represent an opportunity to prove to the national team’s heads why he should feature in the squad at next year’s finals.
However, whilst Diego Leon has been given a chance by his national team, another key Manchester United defender has missed out on the opportunity to represent his national team after being left out of their squad.
Following the announcement of the Netherlands’ squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Finland, one key name was missing – Matthijs de Ligt.
The defender has played six games in the Premier League this season and has been a regular feature in the national team since his international debut in 2017.
Therefore, the revealing of this selection arguably could come as a shock both to the English media and the Dutch media.
But, the selection will mean that the 26-year-old will have a break from competitive playing following Saturday’s game against Sunderland.
Furthermore, in the short-term, de Ligt’s attention could turn towards preparing for United’s game against Liverpool on the 19th of October.
In the long-term, his attention could also switch towards making a positive impact at Old Trafford this summer and regaining his place in the national team ahead of next year’s World Cup.
What can be said is that only time will tell as Matthijs de Ligt aims for improvement.
