Senne Lammens made his Manchester United debut today, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win for the Red Devils against Sunderland.

The Belgian goalkeeper made two vital saves, one in the first-half against Granit Xhaka from range and one in the final few minutes to deny a late consolation from the away side.

The goalkeeper completed a summer move to Old Trafford for an initial fee of £18.2 million, from Royal Antwerp. The 23-year-old got his first chance today and took it. He is now the seventh player from Belgium to represent Manchester United.

His strong saves and brilliant distribution saw him receive plenty of plaudits from fans and Ruben Amorim, who said: “I think he looks confident in the first game but the important thing is the team-mates help Senne to have a good game. Lots of focus, not a lot of mistakes.”

It has taken United eight matches to earn a clean sheet, but it’s taken Lammens just 90 minutes to pick up his first in red. He has had to be patient, sitting on the bench for three matches, but he has taken his opportunity at the first time of asking.

Belgian outlet DH Les Sports + discussed Lammens’ debut, where they wrote: “The goalkeeper appeared to be calm despite the pressure and can boast about having a clean sheet on his debut.”

The clean sheet and great performance now raises the question if he should start in goal for United’s trip to Anfield to take on rivals, upon the end of the international break.

HLN News, another Belgian newspaper, wrote: “All in all, Lammens can look back with satisfaction on his debut in the Manchester United shirt.”

He has received plenty of plaudits from both English and Belgian media, but the goalkeeper will be eyeing up a second United appearance, in two weeks time against Liverpool.
