CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Detroit Lions elevated some pure size from the practice squad ahead of their Week 5 tilt against the Cincinnati Bengals.
They elevated offensive lineman Devin Cochran and cornerback Tre Flowers. Cochran is a 6-foot-7, 330-pound offensive tackle. Flowers is a towering 6-foot-3, 203-pound presence at cornerback.
Cochran has been with the team’s practice squad for nearly a month now. This marks the first time the Lions have elevated the massive offensive tackle. He spent the first three years of his career, including all of the most recent training camp and preseason, with the Bengals. He played in nine games, starting once in Cincinnati last season for the lone regular-season action of his career.
It’s another weekend with left tackle Taylor Decker entering the game as questionable. But Decker has played through the shoulder issue despite practicing only once since Week 1. The expectation is that the team’s longest-tenured player will be good to go.
The Lions have Giovanni Manu as their top depth option at offensive tackle, so Cochran gives them another option, if needed.
Flowers is another massive player for his position. He signed with the team’s practice squad earlier this week, so this marks a quick call-up for the corner. The 30-year-old has towered over the rest of Detroit’s secondary during practice this week.
The 2018 fifth-round pick has played for the Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts and the Bengals during his seven-year career. Flowers hasn’t been a full-time starter since his first two seasons in Seattle back in 2018 and 2019.
Flowers helps fill the depth concerns in the secondary, and should be expected to log some work on special teams. The Lions are without D.J. Reed (hamstring) for the next four games. Reed landed on injured reserve after getting hurt last week. And they are also without cornerback Khalil Dorsey (wrist/concussion) for the Week 5 game in Cincy.
The big cornerback has played 95 games and made 44 starts across seven years. But he has only one interception since 2018, though, and has played more on special teams in recent years.
With Reed and Dorsey out, Terrion Arnold steps into the CB1 role, while Amik Robertson is likely to work on the outside more. If Robertson plays outside more, look for veteran Avonte Maddox to see reps from the slot, with Rock Ya-Sin in the cornerback rotation for certain looks.
Also, there were no fines for either side out of last week’s Lions-Browns game.
