UPDATE: Mark Sanchez has been arrested, according to police.
Former Jets and Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez is recovering in an Indianapolis hospital after he was reportedly stabbed early Saturday.
Sanchez, 38, is in stable condition, according to a statement from Fox Sports. Sanchez was in town to broadcast Sunday’s game between the Colts and Raiders.
“Mark Sanchez was injured in Indianapolis on Saturday and is currently recovering in the hospital in stable condition,” FOX Sports said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time.”
TMZ first reported that Sanchez was taken to the hospital in critical condition after he was stabbed in an early morning incident downtown. Multiple reports from Indianapolis indicate there was a stabbing around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday morning involving two unidentified men from out of the area.
FOX59 said the Indianapolis Metro Police Department is “investigating a physical disturbance” involving two adult males that resulted in “one man receiving lacerations and the other sustaining injuries consistent with stab wounds.”
The report, from FOX59’s Angela Ganote, continued:
“Detectives believe this was an isolated incident between the two men and not a random act of violence. Both individuals, who are not local residents, have been identified. IMPD Aggravated Assault detectives are continuing the investigation and have reviewed video footage of the incident.
“Both men received medical treatment. The man with the apparent stab wounds remains hospitalized in stable condition.
The case will be presented to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for a charging decision. It is the practice of the IMPD Public Affairs Office to not identify victims or suspects in incidents unless the suspect is arrested, charged, or being sought."
Sanchez, the No. 5 overall pick by the Jets in 2009, led them to the AFC Championship game as a rookie and again in 2010 (their most recent postseason appearance). He also played for the Eagles and Cowboys before finishing his NFL career with Washington in 2018.
