Minnesota Vikings place former Alabama All-American on injured reserve

The Minnesota Vikings placed center Ryan Kelly on injured reserve on Saturday after the former Alabama All-American sustained his second concussion of the 2025 season last week.

After Kelly handled every snap for Minnesota in a season-opening 27-24 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sept. 8, Kelly went into the NFL’s concussion protocol in the first half of a 22-6 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 14.

Kelly missed the Vikings’ 48-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 21. He was back in the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but Kelly couldn’t come out for the second half of a 24-21 loss.

Kelly will be required to miss at least the next four games before he can return to the field, according to the NFL’s injured-reserve rules. That starts with Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns in London. After that, Minnesota plays the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 19, Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 23 and Detroit Lions on Nov. 2.

Kelly joined the Vikings as a free agent in March for a two-year, $18 million contract.

Kelly entered the NFL as the 18th pick in the 2016 draft after winning the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s best center for Alabama’s 2015 CFP national-championship team. He spent nine seasons with the Indianapolis Colts before leaving for Minnesota and has earned Pro Bowl recognition four times.
