The University of Saskatchewan Huskies’ backup quarterback — who played almost exclusively in third-and-short situations this season — started Saturday night for the first time in his collegiate career. When the clock wound down, he was a perfect 1-0.

“The guys around me prepared me for the moment,” Farrell said Saturday night after his Huskies — ranked fifth in the nation — beat the visiting Alberta Golden Bears 31-24 at Griffiths Stadium.
Saskatchewan starting quarterback Anton Amundrud did not dress Saturday. Head coach Scott Flory called it “a personal thing,” adding “you’ll see him back soon.”
Farrell was told late in the week that he would make his first start, and the jitters showed early on with a wonky first pass to receiver Daniel Wiebe. It was also Wiebe — Canada West’s leading receiver — who smoothed those jitters several minutes later when he caught a dodge-and-weave 55-yard touchdown pass that gave the Huskies a 7-3 lead.

Farrell later credited that play with settling everything down, and he ended the night 20-of-32 for 276 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Heading into the night, Farrell’s season stats included one incomplete pass, and 10 carries for 22 yards.
Saskatchewan is now 5-1, and Alberta is 1-5.
“At the end of the day, we found a way to win.” Flory said. “We’re without our starting quarterback, there’s injuries, but nobody made an excuse. Nobody batted an eye. Guys just kept playing.”
The Huskies trailed 24-21 going into the last five minutes, but Saskatchewan’s Lukas Scott booted a 31-yard field goal to tie things up. A cool Farrell then hit Huskies receiver Mason Grabowski with his first career touchdown on a 28-yard pass with 1:18 to play.

“He felt a little bit of the nerves early — that first throw came out a little funky — but Jake just had to settle in,” Flory said. “We tried to get the run game going a little bit, and then he settled in and made the plays when he had to.”
The Huskies also got a 14-yard touchdown catch from Dawson Lennea and a 12-yard TD run from tailback Ryker Frank. That latter major was the 31st of Frank’s career, breaking the Huskies’ all-time record shared by Terry Eisler (30 from 1985 to 1989) and Colton Klassen (30 from 2016 to 2021).
Alberta quarterback Trey Reider — previously a standout with the Saskatoon Hilltops — hit 16 of 28 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns in his return to the city. Reider threw TD tosses of eight and 62 yards to Carter Kettyle, while Duncan Critch scored on a two-yard run.

“I’ve spent a lot of time waiting,” said Farrell, a Saskatoon Holy Cross product who is in his second year of eligibility. “I’ve been so blessed to be a backup on this team — just to be on this team regardless. Waking up this morning, I was excited. Excited to share the field with the guys I love, and excited to play some football.”
The entire conference gets a Thanksgiving bye next weekend. The Huskies wrap up their regular season with an Oct. 17 game at British Columbia and an Oct. 25 home clash with the Manitoba Bisons.
The Regina Rams, also 5-1, kept pace with the Huskies Saturday by beating Calgary 18-12.
