Pep Guardiola secured his 250th Premier League win in record time, with an Erling Haaland strike securing a 1-0 win for Man City at Brentford.
Manchester City stretched their unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions with a 1-0 victory over Brentford in London on Sunday.
Erling Haaland was once again the matchwinner, scoring his ninth Premier League goal of the season to ensure Man City enter the October international break just three points off league leaders Arsenal.
Pep Guardiola also secured his 250th Premier League victory as a manager, becoming the quickest to reach the landmark (349 games) and breaking Alex Ferguson’s previous competition record (404 games). He is just the 16th manager to do that at a single club in top-flight English league history, again being the quickest to do so.
Coming into this match, Haaland had only failed to score at two Premier League grounds that he’d appeared at. The Gtech Community Stadium (176 mins played, 7 shots before today) had been one of those, along with Anfield, but that run came to an end just nine minutes into this game.
Picking up a long ball from Josko Gvardiol in the box, Haaland spun his marker and took a touch to ghost past another defender before striking past Caoimhín Kelleher to score his 12th competitive club goal since the start of August, double the tally of any other Premier League player. It also meant that he’s now scored at 22 of the 23 stadiums he’s played at in the Premier League, the highest ratio of any player in the history of the competition (96%).
Erling Haaland Goals in 2025-26
Amazingly, only two players have scored more goals across their team’s opening seven Premier League games in a season than Haaland this campaign (9) – both of those were the Norwegian himself, in 2002-23 (11) and last season (10).
City were dealt a worrying blow on 21 minutes when influential midfielder Rodri limped off the pitch to be replaced by Nico González. Much of City’s woes in 2024-25 came because of his absence in the side, losing nine of the 35 Premier League matches that he missed last season due to his ACL injury.
The second half passed without much incident, with City happy to sit back and soak up any pressure. They only attempted one shot in the entire 45 minutes after half-time, without any hitting the target – only the seventh time that City have attempted one shot or fewer in the second half of a competitive match under the Spaniard.
Brentford hardly posed much of a threat themselves, either. For the first time in their 159 Premier League games, the Bees failed to record a single touch in the opponent’s penalty area in the first half. They also had just one shot in the opening 45 minutes (Igor Thiago, 36th minute), their second-fewest in the first half of a home Premier League match (after 0 versus Newcastle in February 2022).
