Mac Jones appears to be reviving his career in San Francisco.
The ex-New England Patriots quarterback is 3-0 in three starts for the 49ers this season and helped them to a thrilling overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5.
After how things ended for Jones in New England, there were questions if he was going to end up a bust after being drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
“He clearly wasn’t washed,” Colin Cowherd said on “The Herd With Colin Cowherd.” “Maybe he just had to wash the Patriot stink off him, because he was great (Thursday) night. In passing yards per game, San Francisco now, between (Brock) Purdy and Mac Jones, has two of the top three in the league. And it just shows you the power of these great offensive coaches. They did a couple of shots of (Rams coach Sean) McVay on the sideline — he looked stunned.”
“My jaw was on the floor with this thing,” Cowherd later added. “What Mac was doing, often deep in (Rams) territory with no big run game ... that was a big boy assignment.”
This is Jones’ first season in San Francisco after he signed a two-year deal with the team in March after spending a not-so-great 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Before that, Jones spent his first three years with the Patriots.
But things didn’t go well in New England. After a promising rookie season in 2021, Jones couldn’t build off that year, regressed and struggled to find a groove under center.
In June, ESPN wrote that San Francisco is the perfect place for Jones to revive his career because he could take a similar path that Sam Darnold took. He played well enough with the 49ers that the quarterback earned a full-time opportunity with the Minnesota Vikings last season.
It’s unclear if Jones will start in Week 6.
