The Bills host the Patriots on “Sunday Night Football” to conclude their three-game home stand. With the Philadelphia Eagles’ loss earlier today, Buffalo is the lone team in the NFL still unbeaten.
New England, meanwhile, enters the contest at .500 and is coming off a blowout win over the Carolina Panthers.
The matchup has major implications for the AFC East standings, as a Bills win would give them a three-game lead in the division. However, a Patriots upset victory would pull them within one game.
While Buffalo remained undefeated by defeating the New Orleans Saints last week, it didn’t play its best brand of football before prevailing in the second half for a 31-19 win.
Perhaps most notably, the Bills allowed the Saints to rush for 189 yards; their 53.7 Pro Football Focus rush defense grade is the fifth-worst in the NFL. Anchored by Rhamondre Stevenson and rookie TreVeyon Henderson, New England’s 55.1 PFF rushing grade is the second-lowest in the NFL.
Another key factor to watch is if the Patriots’ defense can get off the field. They boast the third-worst overall defensive PFF grade, while Buffalo has the third-highest offensive grade.
If Buffalo wins tonight, it will open the season with five straight wins for the first time since 1991. That year, it finished the regular season 13-3 before losing the Super Bowl to the Washington Redskins.
