CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Kalif Raymond took a nasty shot and exited Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals with a neck injury.
But the Detroit Lions don’t think Raymond has a serious injury. Dan Campbell said his status for next week’s trip to Kansas City is uncertain. But the Lions coach said the updates have all been good news in the immediate aftermath.
Raymond got injured when fielding a punt return back deep near the end zone. He appeared to stumble and took a stiff shot to the head area from Bengals running back Samaje Perine.
The wide receiver, All-Pro punt returner was down on the field for a stretch. But Raymond was able to walk off on his own power before heading to the locker room via the medical cart.
“Leaf, I’ll know more -- I can’t tell you what it’s going to be next week,” Campbell said of Raymond’s status. “But this does not feel like some serious (issue). That doesn’t mean he’ll play next week. But it’s good news in other words. As a matter of fact, he told me, ‘That didn’t feel too good. But I’m good.’ That’s what he said.”
Rookie Isaac TeSlaa filled Raymond’s role on the offense for the rest of the game. TeSlaa caught a touchdown, using two hands this time, to help end Cincinnati’s fourth-quarter surge in the 37-24 win.
TeSlaa has three catches to open his career, with two of those resulting in touchdowns and the other leading to a touchdown on the next play. The Lions credited the rookie for stepping up despite not practicing much of what he was doing at full speed.
Terrion Arnold also left the game with a shoulder injury. It’s the second straight week Arnold has exited and not returned due to a shoulder injury.
He managed to practice all week and was out there in a starting cornerback role for the Lions. Campbell didn’t have much of an update on Arnold, saying they would know more on Monday back home.
The second-year cornerback had two more penalties, but he also responded with back-to-back pass breakups after one of those negated a safety.
