‘Exactly what Everton needed’: BBC Sport pundit hails Toffees substitute as David Moyes’…

Everton boss David Moyes continues to juggle his strikers as Thierno Barry and Beto battle it out for the starting spot.

Everton have been through so many strikers in recent years, failing to really find a consistent goalscoring threat.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin departed this past summer, and Everton invested in Thierno Barry after impressing for Villarreal.

Barry is one for the future and has yet to really shine in an Everton shirt, with Sunday proving to be a difficult day.

BBC pundit praises Everton striker Beto

Barry was substituted at half-time against Crystal Palace after failing to make a first-half impact.

Beto came on in Barry’s place, though the Guinea-Bissau international hasn’t exactly impressed this season either.

Everton at least turned the game around with Beto on the pitch, coming from 1-0 down to beat Palace 2-1.

Jack Grealish’s fortuitous winner came after Beto’s close-range header had been brilliantly saved by Dean Henderson.

Beto has still only scored once this season, but pundit Alex Bruce was impressed with his performance against Palace.

Bruce told BBC Sport that he felt Beto was ‘exactly what Everton needed’ in order to turn the game after the Toffees fell 1-0 down.

Bruce called Beto a ‘handful’ and felt that his physical presence, as well as his willingness to run the channels, really helped Everton threaten Palace.

“Beto is a handful. He puts himself about and he runs the channels,” said Bruce.

“He is a big physical presence for Everton. He is exactly what Everton needed,” he added.

David Moyes still searching for his striking solution

Everton seemingly hoped that Beto’s purple patch last season would become a more consistent factor this season.

The idea was for Barry to come in to support Beto while developing his game, but it’s clear that Moyes doesn’t know his best striker yet.

Beto was substituted at half-time against Liverpool, with Barry coming on in his place.

Just three days later, Barry was substituted at half-time in favour of Beto in a 2-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

On Sunday, Barry was again substituted at half-time, with Beto handed another chance to shine.

Sadly, this may be a common occurrence until January, as Moyes attempts to find a striking option he can trust before the transfer window opens.

Beto is streaky, and Barry looks incredibly raw, so the chopping and changing looks set to continue for a while yet.
