PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Arizona Cardinals fell in brutal fashion to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday 22-21. The loss moves Arizona's record to 2-3, as the Titans pick up their first win of the season.
After getting out to a lead as big as 18 points in the second quarter, the Titans mounted a comeback in the second half.
With what seemed like a clear discrepancy in skill was made up by luck being on Tennessee's side today.
The clock displayed 4:39 in the fourth quarter when complete chaos broke out, making for what may go down as the craziest play of the year.
The Titans found themselves at the opposing 20-yard line on a short third down. Cam Ward dropped back and rifled a pass that was deflected by a defender, allowing safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson to make a diving interception. Before being touched by a Titan to end the play, he fumbled the ball. In an attempt to scoop the ball up by a couple of Cardinals players, it was accidentally hit forward several yards into the end zone where Titans wide receiver Tyler Lockett was able to recover for a touchdown.
The Cardinals responded by stringing together several plays before punting at the two-minute warning. The Titans went on to drive into field goal range where kicker Joey Slye drilled a game-winning 29-yard field goal.
In the first half it seemed as though Arizona would run away with an easy victory. Michael Carter and Murray rushed for a touchdown on the first two offensive drives of the game.
Zonovan Knight punched in another touchdown in the second quarter to up the lead to 21-3. The Cardinals only allowed a field goal leading up to the fourth quarter, but two costly fumbles halted the offensive attack.
Of the two turnovers, one proved to be pivotal in the game's outcome. Emari Demercado, who played a bigger role with the injuries to James Conner and Trey Benson, broke free for what originally looked like a 72-yard touchdown run. That was until an official review showed that Demercado dropped the ball before crossing the goal line and fumbled the ball out of bounds for a touchback.
The Titans went on to string three drives ending in a score to get the victory.
The Cardinals now have to prepare for a date with the 4-1 Colts in Indianapolis.
