Jamie Redknapp says Liverpool had an £11m striker who reminds him of Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland is the best player in the Premier League right now, but Jamie Redknapp thinks Liverpool once had a forward who reminds him of the Norwegian.

“Erling Haaland scores again in the Premier League” is a phrase football fans are beginning to hear every week, and this was no different as Manchester City took on Brentford.

The Cityzens emerged 1-0 victors, with the 25-year-old bagging his eighth goal in just six games in England’s top flight.

The Norwegian is being compared to many of the great Premier League strikers of all time, but Jamie Redknapp has just made one of the more bold comparisons.

Jamie Redknapp compares Emile Heskey to Erling Haaland

Speaking on Sky Sports after the City against Brentford clash concluded, the former Liverpool midfielder compared his ex-teammate Emile Heskey to the Man City goal-getter.

Redknapp said, “In this type of situation [just before his goal], he reminds me of Emile Heskey. When someone gets Emile angry, that’s the kind of thing he can do. And that was similar to Haaland today.”

The two are very different players, but the boisterous playing style that both possess is undeniable, and Haaland showed it with aplomb against the Bees.

One major difference, however, was the price tag, with Heskey costing Liverpool just £11m in 2000, which at the time was a record transfer for the Reds.

But despite Haaland’s bossy approach on the pitch, the Norwegian reveals that off it, he’s never felt more relaxed – and that’s because of his son.

“I’ve never felt better than now! To be honest, I think with a kid, it makes me even better because I actually disconnect more than ever,” he told Sky Sports.

Another former Liverpool star, Jamie Carragher, also piled praise on Haaland. The centre-back told Sky Sports the striker is the “best goalscorer we’ve ever seen in English football.”

Carragher said: “He can achieve whatever he wants and he will break every record we’ve got in this country if he stays until the end of his contract.

“When I was watching him today and the start he’s made to the season, and the impact he’s made to the Premier League, I think we’re watching the greatest goalscorer that’s ever played in English football.”

Another bold statement, considering the likes of Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer and many more to pass through England’s top flight.

The test of time will be the making of this claim for Haaland, but given his current form, he’s evidently moving in the right direction.
