Manchester United and Newcastle United make contact to sign Barcelona player in January

Manchester United and Newcastle United are among the clubs looking at Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen ahead the January window.

That’s according to Sport, who report Manchester United and Newcastle contacted Barca for the goalkeeper.

The Germany international suffered a back injury in July and is currently on the sidelines. The 33-year-old is expected to make full recovery by the end of November.

Hansi Flick made summer signing Joan García as his No.1 this season. He’s also on the sidelines and is expected to return within a month. Wojciech Szczęsny has started in goal in the Spaniard’s absence.

Ter Stegen’s contract lasts until 2028, but the stopper’s future at the Camp Nou is ‘up in the air’. He knows it’ll be difficult to get regular minutes at the Camp Nou, which is needed to make it Germany’s squad for the next World Cup.

Barca, on the other hand, are aware he has a market, ‘specifically in the Premier League.’ It’s claimed the ‘interest is high’ in England where Manchester United and Newcastle are named as his suitors.

The report states the Premier League duo along with Tottenham Hotspur made contact with Barcelona. AS Monaco are also showing interest even though Ter Stegen rejected them last summer.

According to Sport, most of these clubs would be open to loan with an option to buy in January. Barca won’t sanction a move unless the player asks for a transfer, something he hasn’t done so far.

The Red Devils and Newcastle signed Senne Lammens and Aaron Ramsdale respectively last summer.

The Belgian made his debut for Manchester United last Saturday. If Lammens’ form drops, Ruben Amorim’s side could consider a loan move for Ter Stegen in the winter market.

There’s every chance this is the Catalan media reporting in hope rather than expectation.
