Crystal Palace came up short at Everton on Sunday, losing their unbeaten record.
Crystal Palace saw their unbeaten record end on Sunday after they came up short at Everton. Daniel Munoz put the Eagles ahead on Merseyside, but Iliman Ndiaye scored an equaliser in the 76th minute, and Jack Grealish went on to score the winner in stoppage time.
Palace have been one of the stories of the season so far amid excellent form, but the Everton clash proved a bridge too far amid a very busy week that also saw them win in the Conference League in Poland during the week.
"That's what you want to do as a winger,” he said when asked about his goal. “I have one goal and four assists that's what I want to do. It was difficult to do that today against such a good team. They have some unbelievable players.
"I think Adam Wharton today, I can see the Man of the Match award there, I think it's coming to me but I think it should go to Adam Wharton because, in my opinion, he was the best player on the pitch today."
Wharton was told about those comments, and he responded: “I worked hard. I try and give my best for the team every single game to try and help us win. That's what I try to do every single game.
“Jack's a top player. He's obviously kicked on since he moved here. He played well and scored the winning goal, so it’s a good game from him. I'm not too fussed about any award. I just want to win every game. Unfortunately we didn’t do that.”
Wharton on Palace’s unbeaten record ending
Palace were the only remaining Premier League unbeaten side this season, and they hadn’t lost in any competitions until this one.
“For me, personally, the unbeaten run is irrelevant,” Wharton added. “This is football. You go into every game wanting to win. We don't want to lose or draw every game. Especially when you're on the pitch, you're not thinking about that. You're just thinking about, in the moment, how to win the game that you're playing.
“It's over now. People will probably stop talking about it. It might put a bit of pressure off some of the players if they're feeling it. But, yeah, we're going into the next game with exactly the same mindset [to win].”
