Rhamondre Stevenson put the ball on the ground again in Buffalo.
A first quarter fumble was the veteran running back’s third of the season and 10th in his last 20 games. After catching a pass from Drake Maye, Stevenson let Bills linebacker Shaq Thompson punch the ball out as he was going to the ground.
Mike Vrabel didn’t glue Stevenson to the bench though.
The back continued to get carries — his backup Antonio Gibson went down with a knee injury in the second quarter — and Stevenson wound up scoring two touchdowns after the fumble in New England’s 23-20 upset of the Bills.
After the win, Vrabel weighed in on where things go from here with Stevenson.
“We’ve gotta get this corrected. We’ve gotta get it corrected,” Vrabel repeated, “but we also need everybody’s skillset. We want to be aggressive but we don’t want to be reckless. You can’t relax. You can’t be two, three, four inches from the ground and let them go in there. We’ll just keep practicing it. We’ll keep repping it. But to his credit, he was able to help us in the end like a lot of other guys.
“So we’ve gotta get it fixed because we need his ability and his skillset, but we can’t put the ball on the ground.”
