Premier League long throws increase hugely in numbers

Long throws are back in fashion in the Premier League.

Launches into a packed penalty box had become a forgotten trend in recent seasons, but the long throw has returned in numbers during the 2025/26 season.

Opta have revealed that there have already been 262 throw-ins into the opposition penalty area in the Premier League this season, already 45% of the entire total for the 2024/25 campaign.

Brentford full-back Michael Kayode is quickly developing a reputation as one of the Premier League’s best. The 21-year-old has regularly launched long throws into the opposition box this season, as the Bees look to capitalise on the defender’s athleticism.

It’s been a throwback to a bygone era, with former Stoke City star Rory Delap earning cult status for his ability to throw huge distances. The former Republic of Ireland international offered Stoke a real weapon during his time at the club, cementing his status in Premier League history.

Delap will be watching on with delight at the return of the long throw.
