David Moyes sympathised with Graham Potter following his West Ham sacking last month.
Everton manager David Moyes gave his feelings on the sacking of Graham Potter last week and those words have now been picked up by talkSPORT and slammed by Simon Jordan.
The former Crystal Palace owner reacted to Moyes’ programme notes that were penned ahead of taking on Crystal Palace at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. The Toffees won that match 2-1 in dramatic late fashion, following on from a 1-1 draw against West Ham last Monday night.
That meeting with the Hammers was Nuno Espirito Santo’s first match in charge of the London outfit. The former Nottingham Forest manager was appointed to take over from Potter with the latter struggling to turn the tide.
David Moyes gives thoughts on Graham Potter sacking
Nuno’s arrival at West Ham was somewhat of a controversial affair. The ex Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur boss was seen having talks with club officials before Potter had even departed. Potter then took the pre match press conference prior to the trip to Everton before being unceremoniously sacked.
Moyes wrote: “Monday night’s game was made more difficult for us because West Ham changed their manager on Saturday with Nuno coming in, offering to play a different style of play. We come into the job knowing we could lose our job at any time and we fully appreciate expectations that are put on anyone who chooses to become a football manager or coach, but I don’t think that means you should treat football managers differently to the way you would treat mangers in other industries.
“I strongly believe that this whole process can be conducted with far more dignity. In life we often have to receive bad news at different times but bad news should be delivered in the best way possible. I hope in future managers can be treated with a little more respect by clubs and the media.”
Simon Jordan slams Moyes’ West Ham musings
Jordan poured scorn on those quotes when speaking on talkSPORT on Monday morning. The 58-year-old did not hold back with his criticism of Moyes’ attempted jibe at West Ham. The Scotsman spent two separate stints managing at the London Stadium but endured a tricky relationship with the fan base over his style of play.
Jordan said: “I would imagine, and I like David a lot, that in David’s wide experience of other industries and how managers are treated, he can speak from a reference points of understanding that. He’s been a football manager and football player all his life, closeted and institutionalised, protected from the outside world.
“He’s got an axe to grind with West Ham for, I think, legitimate reasons. I don’t think he was treated very well by the fans at West Ham at times and the board, in terms of the work he did and that his contract was just allowed to run down. You cannot, with all due respect to Moysey, suggest that you can compare the opportunities and trivails of a football manager to any other walk of life. It’s a public domain business, it’s a fixed contract where you get paid for failing and half of them go into the job making sure they get paid if they fail, because of the nature of the job they are in.
“They get rewarded beyond the dreams of most managers in any other industry. So really, David, pack it in. I understand that you think it’s awful for Graham Potter to have done a press conference and then ultimately lose his job.”
