Jamie Carragher leapt to the defence of Newcastle United star Nick Woltemade this weekend, but also spotted an underrated role Dan Burn played as the Magpies cruised past Nottingham Forest.
Woltemade scored for the fourth time in five starts as Newcastle ground out a 2-0 Premier League victory over Forest to continue Ange Postecoglou's nightmare start in the Midlands.
The Germany international, who had earlier hit the bar, converted an 84th-minute penalty to add to Bruno Guimaraes’ opener as Postecoglou’s seventh game at the Forest helm ended in defeat despite a battling performance on Tyneside.
Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade
Eddie Howe’s men never hit the heights they did during Wednesday night’s 4-0 Champions League win at Union St-Gilloise, but were value for the points on a day when they at times looked fatigued, yet still found a way to win.
Woltemade has now joined Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer as the only players to score in their first three Premier League home games for the club, and Carragher was quick to chastise recent comments from Bayern board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who labelled Newcastle "idiots" for paying £69m for the striker.
"I really like (Woltemade), and I actually saw that quote a few days ago and it angered me and I am not a Newcastle United supporter," Carragher said during his new Sky Sports analysis show.
"I think it's a joke really, coming from someone who is part of a football club, in terms of Bayern Munich, a really respected football club.
"He shouldn't be speaking about, especially, another German player like that so disrespectfully. That would have been all over the news in Germany, and his family and friends are there.
"That's our job, we are pundits, not somebody associated with such a fantastic club. That is really disrespectful, and when I saw that, I thought 'Do you know what? I really hope that lad shoves those words down his mouth.'
"And at the start of his Premier League career, it looks like he is going to."
And the towering new signing is not the only Magpies player who drew special praise from the Liverpool legend this weekend.
Carragher praises Dan Burn's role in Bruno Guimaraes screamer
Speaking during his new Sunday night show on Sky, Carragher pointed to the subtle assist from Burn, who ran forward to set up Guimaraes' stunning strike.
"Dan Burn does great, Dan Burn gets the assist and some people laugh at assists, and say 'a little simple pass?' No, I'll tell you why Dan Burn deserves an assist.
"How many times do defenders run forward and have a stupid shot over the bar? And he gets a big laugh and a cheer from the crowd - it's almost like a joke.
"But he deserves the assist because he doesn't do the stupid thing. He does the clever thing, and he passes the ball to the guy who knows what he's doing."
