Rotherham manager gives verdict on Everton loanee Martin Sherif

Everton coaches really rate Martin Sherif, and Moyes recognised that potential as the teenager was included in his matchday squad several times last season.

Moyes and his chiefs decided a loan was best for Sherif’s development and so he joined League One outfit Rotherham United.

The 19-year-old scored his second goal for the club against Bradford City on the weekend and manager Matt Hamshaw reckons he’s got the self-belief to achieve big things in his career.

“Look, he’s going to do things wrong, he’s going to do things right,” the Rotherham manager explained. “It’s part and parcel of why Everton have sent him out on loan.

“It’s going to be a big step up for him, but from what I’ve seen in training and in games, he certainly fits the profile of what we’re looking for.

“He’s not arrogant but believes in himself. I think that all good players do. If you look at the players I’ve worked with here (previously as a coach), the ones who have gone on to achieve great things have all had that.”

Martin Sherif will need to work on hold-up play

When Sherif was plying his trade for Everton’s under-18s, Leighton Baines was trying to improve his hold-up play.

“Leighton spoke to me about my hold-up play and he used Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a good example,” Sherif previously said.

“Kieran (Driscoll – Under 18s assistant head coach) has helped with my composure in front of goal. Both of them have been really helpful to me, so I appreciate that.

Given that Baines has worked with the teenage striker, perhaps that stands him in good stead to get an opportunity upon his return from Rotherham.
