Before leading the San Francisco 49ers to a 26-23 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night, quarterback Mac Jones thought he saw a body floating in the water near the team’s hotel in Marina del Rey, California.
Jones saw the body from the balcony of his hotel room, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported, and the police were called.
Jones wasn’t the only one who saw the body.
Lt. Daniel Vizcarra of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told SFGATE.com that maintenance personnel at the hotel had alerted the authorities, too. Vizcarra reported an attempt to render aid by emergency personnel was unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 49ers witnessed the authorities at work as the team boarded buses for the game at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
Vizcarra said the incident remains under investigation.

Jones did not mention the incident at his press conference after he made his third start of the season in place of San Francisco’s usual starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, who has a toe injury.
The former Alabama All-American ran his record to 3-0 filling in for the 49ers in his first season with San Francisco.
