Seahawks Next Gen Stat Of The Week: Sam Darnold To Jaxon Smith-Njigba Connection Continues To…

The Seahawks dropped a close game in Week 5, losing to Tampa Bay 38-35, but while they didn't get the result they wanted, the Seahawks did get another impressive performance out of quarterback Sam Darnold and top receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

While leading the Seahawks on five consecutive touchdown drives, the last of them a 99-yard drive that gave Seattle a 35-28 lead late in the fourth quarter, Darnold completed 28 of 34 passes for 341 yards and four touchdowns, all seasons-highs.

Darnold was particularly effective throwing downfield, completing 7 of 8 attempts for 164 yards and three touchdowns on throws 10-plus yards downfield, according to NFL Next Gen Stats, giving him a perfect 158.3 passer rating on such throws.

Darnold also put up big numbers outside of the pocket, completing 5 of 6 attempts for 79 yards and another perfect passer rating, the second time in his career he has had a perfect rating on throws outside of the pocket.

And for the fifth consecutive game, Darnold's top target was third-year receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, hauling in eight receptions for a season-high 132 yards and a touchdown. Per Nex Gen Stats, Smith-Njigba had four catches for 52 yards and a touchdown on in-breaking routes, and he caught all three of his targets on throws over 10 air yards, gaining 81 yards on those receptions.
