Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim dropped Altay Bayindir from the starting XI and turned to the Red Devils’ summer signing for Saturday’s Premier League tie.
Senne Lammens’ performance earned praise from United fans and the Red Devils shot-stopper walked away from the Sunderland match with a clean sheet.
Speaking in his BBC Sport column, Troy Deeney labelled Lammens as “exceptional” and insisted that the former Royal Antwerp star’s “kicking was excellent” as well.
“Exceptional from the young man against Sunderland,” he said.
“He’s come in at Old Trafford, where goalkeepers have struggled, and it’s the first time I’ve ever seen a keeper get a standing ovation for coming and claiming a ball.
“His kicking was excellent, he wasn’t afraid to shout at people either.”

BBC pundit Troy Deeney includes Mason Mount in his Premier League Team of the Week picks alongside Senne Lammens
Joining Senne Lammens in the BBC Sport Team of the Week was none other than Mason Mount, who played a starring role in the United attack on Saturday.
Mount was on United fans’ radar during the Sunderland match and Red Devils supporters dropped high praise on the 26-year-old former England international.
Speaking on United’s current No 7, Deeney said: “This is a bit of a wildcard, but he was excellent against Sunderland.
“Has struggled with injuries and left Chelsea for United under a bit of a cloud. He hasn’t really hit the ground running because of the injuries but looked back to his best.”
Deeney claimed that Mount was the “best player” from United’s Premier League win “by a country mile” and the Red Devils missed his influence when he came off.
“Calm, composed, worked hard for the team and got his goal,” he continued.
“When he came off after 65 minutes, the game lost its rhythm – he was the best player on the pitch by a country mile.”
Amorim withdrew Mount from Saturday’s match in the second half and the 40-year-old United manager brought on summer signing Matheus Cunha in his place.
