Historically, scoring is down early in the season as it typically takes offenses more time to find a rhythm while defenses come out firing out of the gate. That’s not the case early in the 2025 NFL season. Through five weeks, NFL teams are averaging 23.4 points per game. It would be the highest scoring average since 2020. That’s not where the history comes in. According to NFL.com, there have been 14 games where a team scored 40-plus points after Week 5. It’s the most through five weeks in league history, with the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, and Baltimore Ravens responsible for a pair of those 40-burgers.

While the likes of Myles Garrett and Micah Parsons get most of the national attention, Denver Broncos edge rusher Nik Bonitto is the one on a record-breaking pace. The former 64th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Bonitto leads the NFL with 7 sacks this season after recording 1.5 or more sacks in each of his last three games. He’s currently on pace for 24 sacks in a 17-game season, which would shatter the record (22.5) held by Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt.

Spencer Rattler’s victory over the New York Giants in Week 5 was so much more than just the first win of the season for the New Orleans Saints and the first victory in the head-coaching career for Kellen Moore. That’s right, per CBS Sports, it was the first time a quarterback drafted by the Saints had won a game for the franchise since Danny Wuerffel in 1998. Prior to that, it had all been free-agent signings (Drew Brees, Jameis Winston , Derek Carr and Andy Dalton) and trade acquisitions (Teddy Bridgewater and Aaron Brooks) who were winning games for this franchise.

In the Week 5 win over Seattle, Mayfield threw for 379 yards and completed 29-of-33 passes. He became just the third player in NFL history to throw for at least 375 yards in a game while completing fewer than five passes incompletions, joining Kurt Warner and Peyton Manning who both achieved this in playoff games.

The NFL has made numerous changes in recent years to increase the number of kickoff returns, wanting to bring more excitement to the game. Tweaks made this offseason have resulted in exactly what the league office wanted. After Week 5, teams are averaging 4.1 kickoff returns per game, with the NFL recording its highest amount of kickoff returns through five weeks in league history. Notably, though, the average return yardage (25.4) is down a bit from last season (27.6) but it is still the second-highest mark in recorded history.

The more things change around the National Football League, the more the New York Jets stay the same. There was hope this offseason when the team hired defensive-minded head coach Aaron Glenn to help build a new culture for this Jets’ organization. It’s safe to say the franchise didn’t expect making this kind of history. According to ESPN, the Jets are the first team since 1933 (when turnovers were recorded) to not record a single takeaway through their first five games.

The Arizona Cardinals have no one but themselves to blame for making unfortunate NFL history in Week 5. They had 10 days to recover from a four-day span where the San Francisco 49ers (35-yarder) and Seattle Seahawks (52-yarder) each hit game-winning field goals as time expired. Leading 21-6 in the fourth quarter on Sunday against Tennessee, the heartbreak seemed to be over. Instead, the Cardinals found new ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

You could point to either of the baffling blunders—Emari Demercado not slowing down and dropping the football short of the end zone on a 71-yard run, or Dadrion Taylor-Demerson holding onto the interception but then losing the ball which was kicked into the end zone and recovered for a Titans’ touchdown. Either gaffe alone would have avoided an all-time collapse. But the Cardinals found a way to blow the lead and become the first team in NFL history to lose three straight games on game-winning field goals as time expired.
