Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur have contacted Barcelona over a winter move for Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
According to a report by SPORT, as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The three Premier League clubs have already contacted Barcelona to discuss a winter move for the injury-struck goalkeeper. Additionally, the German international is a target for AS Monaco.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen and his Barcelona stint so far
Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been a polarising figure since joining Barcelona from Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal worth €12 million over a decade ago. While the veteran goalkeeper has enjoyed phases when he has been exceptional, he has also been error-prone, with the inconsistencies increasing in the last few seasons. That has made him a pantomime villain for Barcelona fans.
The 33-year-old has made over 400 appearances thus far for Barcelona while keeping 175 clean sheets and conceding 416 goals. However, while the German international recently became the club captain, he faces an uncertain future after Joan Garcia joined the Blaugrana. However, the German international remains a hot property in the market, with Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.
A man in demand
Intermediaries reportedly offered the Barcelona captain to Manchester United in the summer transfer window. However, the struggling Premier League giants’ interest in the veteran shot-stopper is surprising, even though recent updates have suggested that they want to sign a goalkeeper in the winter transfer window. With ter Stegen in the twilight of his career and struggling for consistency, he will not be a top-notch addition to the Manchester United squad.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United’s interest in Marc-Andre ter Stegen is even more surprising, as they signed Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton in the summer transfer window. So, it is unclear how the Barcelona captain fits into the scheme of things at Newcastle United.
As for Tottenham Hotspur, the Lilywhites have no plans to part ways with Guglielmo Vicario anytime soon. So, with Antonin Kinsky also in Thomas Frank’s squad, the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League winners have no need for a new goalkeeper. Nevertheless, Tottenham, Newcastle United, and Manchester United have contacted Barcelona over a winter move for the veteran stopper.
Apart from the three Premier League bigwigs, AS Monaco will also attempt to sign the 33-year-old German international despite failing to secure his services in the summer transfer window. It will be interesting to see if ter Stegen leaves Barcelona in the coming weeks.
