Fox Sports NFL color commentator and former star tight end Greg Olsen said on Monday that New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye “looked like he’s going to be the best quarterback in the league” following his team’s Week 5 upset of the Buffalo Bills.
Jacob Robinson of The Athletic shared a similar sentiment on Monday.
“New England outplayed the previously undefeated Bills, moving to 3-2 thanks to Drake Maye’s nearly flawless second half, when he completed 13 of 14 passes for 184 yards, including one that would’ve been impressive even as a throwaway,” Robinson wrote. “It might feel premature, but the 23-year-old is truly approaching the superstar tier of NFL quarterbacks — not as the next Brady, but as the first Maye. He’s why the Patriots have turned the AFC East into a two-horse race.”
The former third overall pick enters Monday ranked second in the league in completion percentage (73.9%), fifth in passing yards (1,261), tied for fifth in yards per pass attempt (8.2) and sixth in passer rating (107.8).
Maye’s superb play has propelled the Patriots to their best start since the 2019 season, when they began the year 8-0.

New England would be the seventh and final AFC playoff team if the season ended today and some insiders are predicting that Maye and company will qualify for the postseason in the winter for the first time since the 2021 campaign.
