For all the continuity and star power assembled on offense for the Philadelphia Eagles this season, the results through five games have produced a puzzling mixed bag.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts seems out-of-sync with new play caller Kevin Patullo. Star wide receivers A.J. Brown and DaVonta Smith are obviously frustrated. Even cheat-code running back Saquon Barkley has been searching for answers, whether he’s getting 24 touches like Week 2 at Kansas City, or the inexplicable nine he received in Sunday’s brutal, 21-17 loss at home to the Denver Broncos.
Philly’s struggles out of the chute are hard to fathom, seeing how the offensive group is just about fully intact from last year’s championship team. Some guys are clearly playing through injuries — especially up front — but the Eagles brought back 10 of the 11 starters from 2024, with right guard Mekhi Becton the lone exception.
Here’s the good news: The Eagles have too much talent to stay landlocked for much longer, and their biggest personnel question mark from the offseason? That's been all but answered entering Week 6.
Forgotten Philadelphia Eagles third-round pick Tyler Steen has been a bright spot through first five games as a starter
It’s not that the Eagles (4-1) haven’t moved the football and scored points this season. They just haven’t done anything with the consistency you would expect from a reigning Super Bowl champion.
One of the few constants this season has been Steen, Philly’s right guard and No. 66 overall draft pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Steen appeared to be a wasted pick last summer after he got beaten out by Becton early in training camp. Becton might have been the more decorated prospect coming out of college, but he joined Philly on a prove-it contract and wound up converting from tackle to guard that summer.
General manager Howie Roseman showed faith in Steen by letting Becton walk in free agency. Five games in, the 25-year-old has been a stabilizing force for an offensive line that has key cogs — mainly Landon Dickerson, Lane Johnsoon and Cam Jurgens — battling at less than 100 percent health.
I think absolutely nothing changes if Mekhi Becton was at right guard instead of Tyler Steen, who’s played the best football of any Eagles interior linemen this season. https://t.co/boEx6AJ1iY

Per Pro Football Focus, Steen has been beaten for just one sack this season, and it came in the season opener against Dallas. He’s allowed 10 total QB pressures — tied for second-most on the team with left tackle Jordan Mailata — but he’s committed just one penalty in 320 snaps and has been one of Philly’s most consistent run blockers.

It’s only a matter of time before the Eagles get their act together and start clicking on offense, and Steen’s apparent Year 3 leap will be a boon for the team whenever that happens.
