The NFL’s many cameras and their associated cables tortured a pair of NFL teams on Sunday. New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields saw a pass fall incomplete after hitting the cable-mounted “SkyCam,” while Minnesota Vikings kicker Will Reichard missed a kick that appeared to hit a cable.
Officials did not appear to notice the interference in either situation. Under NFL rules, Fields’ incomplete pass should have been wiped away. The Jets would have replayed the down. Reichard did not receive his deserved “re-kick” after hitting the camera accessory in London.
The Jets ultimately lost to the visiting Dallas Cowboys 37-22. The Vikings needed a last-second touchdown to secure the 21-17 win over the Cleveland Browns in their international matchup.
Jets coach Aaron Glenn said Monday that he did not receive any explanation for the refereeing mistake.
“I have no idea,” the coach of the 0-5 Jets said. “There were a number of things that I questioned, but that’s just the way it goes. Every coach is going to question certain calls that happen in a game and we try to get clarity on it as the week goes by.”
In London, NFL officials did not have a “clear view” of Reichard’s attempt hitting the cable, according to a report from Pro Football Talk. Fans on social media disagreed. High-definition replays showed that the ball appeared to be headed through the uprights before suddenly changing trajectory and missing wide to the right.
