On Your Side: AI scam targets Chiefs fans, cat lovers

(KY3) - Perhaps you saw it while scrolling on your phone. The image of Kansas City Chiefs’ running back, Isiah Pacheco, is being used, claiming he launched a $5 million cat sanctuary.

Don’t get too excited. It’s a scam.

The viral social media post is a hoax aimed at pulling heartstrings. The new cat sanctuary claims to rescue, rehab, and rehome stray and abandoned cats. The place allegedly has a state-of-the-art vet clinic, play areas, and adoption lounges. But it’s all fake.

“Deep fakes are so easy to make and easy to use,” said Steve Weisman with Scamcide. “Anyone can do them. It doesn’t require any level of sophistication.”

Scammers want you to click on the article and donate to the cause.

“Rather than use these apps that will check it for you, I think you have to use the Zero Trust Model. Whatever you see on social media, you can’t trust on the face of it,” said Weisman.

Scammers hope this post will gain popularity. So, if you spot it, do not share it. Do not like it. Do not comment.

If you come across a scam, report it to the Better Business Bureau, Attorney General, and tell On Your Side about it, too.
