One day later, Titans reflect on ‘miracle plays’ that led to 1st win of season

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Tennessee Titans ended their four-game losing streak to start the season thanks to an improbable comeback 22-21 win at Arizona.

The Titans trailed 21-6 going into the 4th quarter, but a confluence of events allowed them to rally for the victory.

Cardinals running back Emari Demercado helped cue the comeback when he dropped the ball ahead of the goal line on a run that would’ve likely been the game-clinching touchdown. Instead, the play was ruled a touchback. The Titans got the ball and then drove for a touchdown of their own.

On Tennessee’s next possession, quarterback Cam Ward threw an interception that was ultimately fumbled by Dadrion Taylor-Demerson. The ball squirted into the endzone, and Titans receiver Tyler Lockett fell on it for a touchdown, pulling Tennessee to within two points.

The Titans’ final drive of the game ended with a Joey Slye game-winning 29-yard field goal. The rally was one of the more bizarre moments of the NFL season.

“I’ve seen a lot of bizarre things in my time in the league, and that’s just the way the game goes sometimes,” said Titans head coach Brian Callahan on Monday. “And what I like about what happened in that game yesterday is that really, for the first four games, we were the team that was making the errors to lose the game. And that’s how that’s the— that’s a real thing is you certainly can lose yourself a game a lot quicker than you can win one. To be on the other side of that and take advantage of those opportunities when they arose and to be able to make the plays necessary to win the game was a nice change of pace for us, and that’s where you want to be. Weird things happen in this league all the time. The ball bounces strangely. I could take you back to the (Tim) Tebow season in Denver and show you a whole bunch of crazy stuff that happened that has no real explanation for how we won some of those games. But I think the important part is when you get opportunities to close a game out and win it, we did that for the first time all year. And we weren’t the ones that were putting ourselves in position to lose, and I think that’s where I’m the most proud and the most excited that maybe we’ve turned the corner in that regard."

“It was crazy,” said Safety Amani Hooker. “There were a whole bunch of plays that were ‘miracle plays’ that kind of came our way. But, no matter what, we fought through it, and we fought all the way until the end.”

The Titans next face the 1-4 Raiders in Las Vegas.

Tennessee has not won back-to-back games since November of 2022.
