He could rival Yamal: Man Utd teen is "one of the most exciting talents in the world" - opinion

The Class of '92 is known the world over. It's perhaps one of the best crops of academy talents we've ever seen, not just at Manchester United, but in English football.

Six footballers by the names of David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes all quickly became household names, graduating at the same time and becoming United legends in the process.

While Carrington isn't as successful as that now, it has generated plenty of household names in recent years from Marcus Rashford to Kobbie Mainoo.

Tradition is central to the academy and it has proven to be such a big success that the Red Devils have had someone from their academy in every first-team matchday squad since 1937. It's a remarkable fact and one that's currently being held together by Mainoo.

But, with the threat of the midfielder leaving still lingering in the air, who are the next crop of talents hoping to maintain that 88-year record?

The biggest young talents at Manchester United right now

The Class of '92 may well have been over 30 years ago now but the United academy is showing no signs of slowing down, having enjoyed a fabulous start to the campaign.

Indeed, at the top age groups, the Red Devils sit second in the U18 Premier League, level on points with first-placed Manchester City.

As for the U23s, they are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League 2 table on 18 points, two ahead of Ipswich Town.

They have a plethora of players to thank for their good performances to date with the likes of Chido Obi Martin, Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey all shining.

Lacey, who has been compared to Phil Foden in the past, already has two goals in just four appearances, while attacking midfielder Jack Fletcher, someone potentially seen as Bruno Fernandes' future replacement, has also found the net on two occasions.

Unsurprisingly, their top scorer at the moment is Chido Obi, who has bagged three in six league outings to commence the season.

At U18 level, we've seen a number of top-drawer performances. Son of Wayne, Kai Rooney, has scored once in two games and is no doubt one of the biggest storylines of their campaign to date.

Speaking of Rooney, 17-year-old winger Amir Ibragimov has three goals in five outings and has been compared to Wazza for his bite and tenacity.

But, we've got this far and we're yet to speak of United's most exciting talent yet.

Carrington star could rival Yamal in the future

Last term, all of the hype surrounded Chido Obi. He'd arrived from Arsenal off the back of a ridiculous season in front of goal, scoring 32 times in 24 matches at U18 level. For the U16s, he even scored ten goals in one game, a 14-3 victory over Liverpool.

Yet, the young Dane may well have a rival for first-team minutes in the coming years for a 15-year-old by the name of JJ Gabriel is making waves.

Gabriel only turned 15 on Monday but has been generating a storm at youth level this season after scoring seven goals in six U18 Premier League matches.

A centre-forward who can also play on the wings, he's been described as the 'Kid Messi' for his dazzling dribbling ability. That attribute is without a doubt his greatest strength.

Yet, as the numbers demonstrate in 2025/26 so far, he's also pretty good in front of goal.

Scoring at that rate of knots at youth level is always likely to attract interest but the fact of the matter is that Gabriel has been earning hype for longer than a few weeks.

Just last week, he was hailed as "one of the most exciting talents in the world" by the Manchester Evening News' Steven Railston, with the same publication outlining how some in the know at academy level believe 'he could be the best talent United's academy has ever seen'.

Considering the likes of Beckham, Neville and Giggs have all traversed their way through the youth setup in Manchester, that's a rather bold statement.

However, the fact he already has the backing of Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, and CEO, Omar Barrada speaks volumes.

A top European club were allegedly in advanced talks to sign the teenager this summer but a meeting at the 11th hour that both Wilcox and Barrada attended managed to convince Gabriel to stay. How did they do that? Well, assuring him that he could become the face of the club.

At just 15, the very fact the youngster is the best player in the U18s says a lot. It's a similar rise to Arsenal's Max Dowman who was starring in the same age group last season at the same age.

He is still only 15 and has already earned his Premier League debut for the Gunners in the opening weeks of the new campaign. For Gabriel, you'd imagine a first-team bow wouldn't be too far off either.

While one needs to be careful with how much hype they attach to a young footballer, there will be hopes that Carrington are developing their own very own Lamine Yamal here.

Like Dowman, the Spaniard was 15 years old when he made his debut for Barcelona. He only just turned 18 over the summer but has already been recognised as the second-best player in the world, finishing second to Ousmane Dembele at last month's Ballon d'Or gala.

We're not saying Gabriel will definitely be there in a few years time but many speak of the vast potential this young boy has. He's starring as a 15-year-old at U18 level; he's clearly miles above his age group. This is certainly a player for supporters to get excited about.
