Alan Shearer praises Man United youngster who played 'huge' part in Sunderland win alongside Senne Lammens

Manchester United returned to winning ways by beating Sunderland 2-0 on Saturday.

Ruben Amorim was afforded some much-needed breathing space after goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko quietened speculation around his uncertain future.

The Red Devils delivered a much-improved performance on a day to remember for new goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who kept a clean sheet on his debut at Old Trafford.

But it was another Manchester United player who caught the eye of Shearer.

While Lammens ultimately ensured the shut-out with several crucial saves, the whole of the United backline delivered, a far cry from their displays during the dismal 3-1 defeat against Brentford.

Amorim has often frustrated supporters by tinkering with his three starting centre-backs, and he changed it up again by opting for Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Luke Shaw for the win over Sunderland.

Yoro was faultless on his return, and Alan Shearer singled him out for praise.

“Played a huge part in a first clean sheet of the season and gave very little away,” he wrote in his Premier League Team of the Week column. “Man Utd look so much more secure when he’s in the side.”

Yoro was restored to Amorim’s XI after being dropped for the previous two matches, and he repaid the head coach’s decision in spades, winning 100% of his tackles and ground duels.

The 19-year-old also completed 80% of his passes before being replaced by Harry Maguire late on.

Shearer was equally impressed by Lammens’ debut between the sticks after he had ousted Altay Bayindir, who was forced to settle for a spot among the substitutes.

The new stopper was serenaded by chants comparing him to Peter Schmeichel during the second half and aside from one nervy moment, he looked assured.

“The goalkeeper did the simple things very well on his debut,” Shearer added. “He made some good saves and commanded his penalty area in a much-needed win over Sunderland.”

Lammens is expected to keep his place in the team when United return to action after the international break against fierce rivals Liverpool at Anfield.
