Sanchez faces felony
Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez is now facing a felony battery charge for what authorities said Monday was a fight over parking, in addition to the misdemeanor charges that the Fox Sports analyst was already facing from the weekend incident in Indianapolis. Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears announced the felony charge of battery involving serious bodily injury, which carries a potential sentence of one to six years in prison, during a news conference with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Chris Bailey. Mears said the investigation is ongoing and that additional charges are possible. A police affidavit alleges the 38-year-old Sanchez, smelling of alcohol, accosted a 69-year-old truck driver who backed into a hotel's loading docks in downtown Indianapolis, leading to a confrontation early Saturday outside the vehicle that prompted the driver to pull out a knife to defend himself. The former New York Jets quarterback was pepper-sprayed and stabbed multiple times during the altercation, according to court records filed Sunday. It became clear after investigators learned more about the victim's medical condition that the more serious felony charge was warranted, Mears said. Sanchez was hospitalized with stab wounds to his upper right torso, the initial affidavit signed by a police detective said. The truck driver, identified as P.T., had a cut to his left cheek, it said. Authorities have not said whether the truck driver might also faces charges, but Mears noted that Indiana "has some of the most robust self-defense laws in the nation."
Hampton heads to IR
Los Angeles Chargers running back Omarion Hampton will be placed on injured reserve, Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday, meaning the rookie first-round pick will be out for at least the next four games. Late in the third quarter of Sunday's 27-10 loss to Washington, Hampton came up limping after colliding with a Commanders pass rusher. After the game, the running back rode by the Chargers' locker room on the back of a golf cart, wearing a protective boot on his left foot. Harbaugh declined to elaborate on the situation in his postgame comments. However, Harbaugh revealed Monday that Hampton will be out for at least a month. Hampton, 22, a North Carolina standout selected 22nd overall last spring, rushed for 44 yards in 12 carries Sunday and had 6 receptions for 26 yards.
Pats lose RB for season
The New England Patriots endured their first season-ending injury in Sunday's upset win over the Buffalo Bills. Running back Antonio Gibson suffered a torn ACL in the 23-20 Week 5 win and will miss the rest of the season, according to multiple reports. Gibson suffered the injury on a kick return. Gibson, 27, took a hard shot to his legs on the play, which resulted in him fumbling the football. Replays showed that Gibson might have suffered the injury before contact, however. The Patriots currently are left with Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson at running back on their 53-man roster. The team also has Terrell Jennings on their practice squad for additional depth.
Watson back at practice
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson returned to practice Monday as he moves a step closer to playing again after tearing his ACL nine months ago. Watson, 26, tore his right ACL on Jan. 5 during the Packers' 24-22 loss to Chicago that closed their 2024 regular season. The Packers placed him on the physically unable to perform list before this season. His return to practice starts a 21-day window before the Packers must activate him in order for him to play this year. Watson, a 2022 second-round pick from North Dakota State, has 98 career catches for 1,653 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also has two career touchdown runs.

McDavid signs extension
Connor McDavid signed a contract extension Monday to remain with the Edmonton Oilers. The three-time MVP and the only NHL organization he has played with finalized a two-year, $25 million contract on the eve of the start of the season. McDavid, 28, will count $12.5 million against the salary cap from 2026-28, the same he has since 2019. The deal for arguably the best hockey player in the world does not come close to approaching the richest contract in league history agreed to last week when Minnesota signed Kirill Kaprizov for $136 million over eight years.

Texans reinstate Gillispie
Tarleton State reinstated men's basketball Coach Billy Gillispie on Monday, three days after the school announced that he had been placed on temporary administrative leave following an anonymous complaint. The school, which announced the leave on Friday, has not revealed any details or the nature of the complaint that initiated the employee conduct review.
