This is it. This is the big one.
Bayern Munich kicks off its Women’s Champions League campaign with a road trip to one of last year’s finalists in FC Barcelona. The Catalans have done it all in the competition and that’s something the Bavarians still aspire to. Can they get it done this time? This will be an early measuring stick for the progress made under first-year coach José Barcala.
The FC Bayern Frauen have been rolling this season so far, but one early hiccup means they find themselves second in the table to VfL Wolfsburg. They won 4-0 at the weekend against Werder Bremen but Wolfsburg’s 8-0 steamroller over SGS Essen gives the She-Wolves the upper hand for now. Still it’s hard to deny that the Bavarians are in a rich vein of form of late.
The question — as usual — will be how that carries over once the UWCL season begins.
Prediction: Bayern w-…oh boy, I don’t know. Barça has a 31:1 goals for/against ratio this season in an admittedly less competitive domestic league, which the club has won at a canter every year since 2019/20. They’re at home and this is going to be a tough test.
Let’s say stubborn defense and possession tendencies, respectively, kick in and the teams slug it out to a dramatic and hard-fought 1-1 draw.
One more prediction. This will be the day Getty Images publishes Bayern Frauen photos more recent than the September 14th match against RB Leipzig.
