The NFL has been handing out big fines for actions it deems to be “unsportsmanlike” in nature. With Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones flipping the bird to New York Jets fans on Sunday during their showdown, the league is coming down hard on him with a steep punishment.
According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the NFL is set to fine Jones a staggering $250,000 for the “gesture” he made towards the Jets fans in attendance.
“Source: NFL is fining Jerry Jones $250,000 for the self-described "unfortunate" gesture he made Sunday to fans at MetLife Stadium. Jones may appeal,” Adam Schefter said on X
Jones has claimed that his gesture was “inadvertent,” and that could lead to the Cowboys’ owner appealing the decision on paying such a hefty fine. To be fair, players have only been hit with fines that range from anywhere from $5,000 -$25,000, so having to pay a quarter of a million dollars is wild.
Still, Jones is not a player, but an owner and general manager of a team. His behavior is likely to be far more scrutinized than that of the players that he leads.
It will be interesting to see how Jones plays this and if he is willing to accept such a massive fine. Considering he has already claimed the double bird gesture was “inadvertent,” it is believed he is set to appeal the decision.
The Cowboys picked up a big win against the Jets and now sit at 2-2-1 on the season. Whether or not Jones’ gesture was due to his excitement over his team finally notching a win, it was something that the league was not going to let slide.
