One of the most disappointing parts of the Philadelphia Eagles' 21-17 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday was the play of cornerback Quinyon Mitchell.
Throughout the first three quarters of the game, Mitchell was shutting down Courtland Sutton, who didn't even have 20 yards during that span. It was the fourth quarter, where Mitchell struggled mightily, and the Broncos were able to storm back from a 14-point deficit to win the game.
Sutton got three receptions for 64 yards on Mitchell in the fourth quarter of the Broncos' win. Mitchell allowed six receptions for 81 yards and five first downs as well.
It was the first time this season that Mitchell allowed more than 49 yards in a game. He was exposed badly. Not all hope is lost despite the game.
Vic Fangio still believes in Mitchell
Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio spoke with the media on Tuesday, where he was asked about his thoughts on Mitchell's performance. Fangio defended his second-year corner and gave more credit to the Broncos' receivers for their play.
“Everything was highly contested. They just made the play and we didn’t.”
A follow up question was asked about whether Fangio believes it has become too much on Mitchell to cover the number one receiver on each team. There was no doubt from Fangio at all.
"No."
Mitchell has had a stellar season and shouldn't be judged based on one game. He just had five pass deflections and was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week back in Week 4 after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game.
It's downright silly to start doubting Mitchell, as he has only shown that he's one of the top coverage corners in the NFL. He's still playing at a high level and is on pace to make his first Pro Bowl appearance.

Mitchell will have his shot on Thursday against the New York Giants to quiet the doubters and prove why he's got the nickname "Quinyonamo Bay."
